Exercise Rx Research

EXERCISE RX OVERVIEW

Exercise Rx is an innovative patient-centered app designed to promote sustainable behavior change around physical activity that includes healthcare provider feedback and motivational support. Our goal is to support patients who are physically inactive in increasing movement in their daily lives in a lasting way to improve their health.

Exercise Rx is a collaboration between The Sports Institute at UW Medicine, the UbiComp Lab at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, and the UW Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering.

THE SPORTS INSTITUTE

WHO WE ARE

The Sports Institute at UW Medicine works to expand participation and safety in sports. Since its founding, The Sports Institute has led first-of-its-kind efforts to legislate safe return to play across all 50 states and to advance best practices in sports safety. Based in Seattle, The Sports Institute partners across sectors and convenes experts, evidence-based approaches and research to encourage play and to make sports safer. The Sports Institute is a proud member of the UW Medicine community, one of the world’s leading centers for patient care, medical education and research.

Our team of physicians, researchers and innovators are committed to advancing the science and building solutions for increased physical activity and sports health and safety. We are firmly rooted in the belief that sport and activity yields abundant benefits and can enhance the physical, mental, and social health of all people long into the future. Working with individuals within UW Medicine, the University of Washington (UW), and thought-leading educators, researchers and organizations across the U.S. and internationally, we seek to make sports accessible and safer as a public health imperative, leveraging sports participation and physical activity as a means to a healthier society.

UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING (UBICOMP) LAB

WHO WE ARE

The Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp) Research Lab, led by Prof. Shwetak Patel, is an interdisciplinary research group that explores techniques for applying common computing tools to improve people’s lives. The UbiComp lab researches novel user interface technology, energy sensing, low-power sensing, health sensing, and activity recognition by combining expertise in sensing, signal processing, embedded systems, circuits, and human-computer interaction.

The UbiComp lab consists of a diverse team of researchers with backgrounds in computer science, electrical engineering, and bioengineering, all coming together to tackle challenging research problems both from building the enabling hardware and software systems to the deployment and evaluation of these technologies in real-world settings. In addition, we have close collaborations with Microsoft Research, Facebook Reality Labs, Intel, Google, and many other companies.
